About: Aquamarine Gemstone
Aquamarine (Latin-water of the sea) is so named because of its seawater colour. A dark blue is the most desired colour. The colouring agent is iron. Lower qualities are heated to 725-850 degrees f(400-450 degrees c) to change them to the desired, permanent aquamarine blue. Higher heat will lead to discoloration. Care must be taken when making jewellery! Colours can also be improved with neutron and gamma irradiation, but these changes do not last. Aquamarine is brittle and sensitive to pressure. Inclusions of fine, oriented hollow rods or aligned foreign minerals rarely cause a cat-eye effect or asterism with six-rayed stars with a vivid sheen.
Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of the Beryl Group of minerals that also includes Bixbite (red), Emerald (green), Goshenite (colourless), Heliodor (yellow), Morganite (pink) and Pezzottaite (reddish pink). Very large Aquamarine crystals have been found including the famous Martha Rocha crystal, found in Brazil, that weighed 134 pounds and yielded 300,000 carats of excellent blue gems! Aquamarine gets its blue-green colour from traces of ferrous iron added to the basic Beryl formula. It is the birthstone for March.
Aquamarine is known from many sources worldwide including Afghanistan; Australia; Minas Gerais and other locations in Brazil; more than fifty specific locations in Madagascar; Myanmar (Burma); Namibia; Pakistan; Russia; Sri Lanka; and in the USA at San Diego County, California; Mt. Antero, Colorado; Connecticut; Maine; and North Carolina.
